Blog Your Blessings: Old Friendships Made New

This week's blessing is the gift of old friendships made new.

Reunions with old friends can take place in the strangest of ways. Recently, I have experienced a few right here in my basement. The first occurred when I opened my email and received a message from one of the most delightful people I have ever known who was a very good friend in high school. We had lost all contact since then. Though he had been trying to find me via email addresses that no longer worked and sites where my accounts no longer existed, Google eventually brought him to my blog and my current email address. That happy reunion led to another with another friend--one with whom he was close but with whom I had lost all contact.

As we've had the opportunity to reconnect online and in person after 25 years, I have rediscovered the joys of the old and familiar and discovered anew the lives of some wonderful people and the equally wonderful people they hold dear. It has been incredibly nice to step into the past just long enough to bring it into the present and discover so many common interests and to remake friendship.

"The most I can do for my friend is simply to be his friend.
I have no wealth to bestow on him.
If he knows that I am happy in loving him,
he will want no other reward.
Is not friendship divine in this?"
(Henry David Thoreau)

  15. Sandy, you always inspire. Congratulations on your renewed friendship. Something like that happened to me with an old college friend. She contacted me a few years ago. Since then we have gotten together in person a couple of times. She has even come out here to celebrate my birthday with me! A blessing I am thankful for every day of my life.

You have another award at my place. I know you don't display them and I believe you've already been given this one anyway, but hey, you're JUST PLAIN FUN.

  18. Sandy

My English is not very good for understand all you post.
But I have beeing writting some words about friendship.
I think that friendship have no time or space to exist.
And we must want all our friend "He is" and not what our friend "He have".

    I don't know if I said correctly!

  19. What a wonderful, positive story Sandy! That is just terrific, finding and connecting with an old friend again. Sadly, I've lost touch with too many dear friends over the years. Perhaps they will find their way to my blogs???

    Hugs, G

  25. Okay, time to do a sheepish admission here of a personal nature... I've often said, If I'm not speaking to them now, there's probably a darned good reason! That cynicism came back to haunt me as I "hooked up" through Facebook to not one, but two old high-school buddies... who just reading about how things have been going for them made fascinating reading... and they're both great people who I'm glad to have been re-acquainted with.

Basically, six-months ago, I probably would have cynically read your blessing and went Sure, maybe for you! Whatever... but now, nope... I completely agree!

  26. The blue sky in that beginning sky shot was so overwhelmingly pretty that I almost missed the moon!

It is wonderful to connect with old friends who had gone their separate ways. I have never gone to a class reunion but maybe one day. That is wonderful that Google was a blessing to you both!

  27. Been trying to figure out what was so magical about the friends we made then. Can't do it, but I can't deny it. I do know that I remembered who I was back then, and more importantly, who I wanted to be back then. I found myself a little bit seeing through my friends eyes. They may be unique, this group of friends, though I hope for the universes sake, that's not the case.

They make me glad to be a member of the same species.

  32. It is indeed great to become friends again with someone you have been friends with before!

The Internet, with all the negatives it might have, has the positive that it can help a person reconnect with people who they have lost touch with.

  33. It is ironic you posted this because my best friend was in town this weekend which reminded me of that. It was also my granddaughter's 11th birthday so I did not not get to spend much time with my friend. Maybe about an hour but I take whatever I can get. It was a photo frenzy too.
