When I was in my teens and a young adult there was a lot of land at the point on Topsail which was exclusively "owned" by the birds that nested there. It was hard certain times of year to even walk on that part of the island (where sound and ocean meet) because the birds would really fly at you as if to say this is our breeding area, leave! It was so sad when developers were allowed to build condominiums and all the houses in that area which displaced so much of the birds breeding ground. They still have some, but only a fraction of what they used to have.
