Skywatch Friday: Keeping Time in Waterbury

Clock Tower

This is the clock tower above the Republican-American newspaper building in Waterbury, Connecticut. The building was once the Union Street Railroad Station. The tower has the same design as the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, Massachusetts and is modeled after the Torre del Mangia in Siena, Italy.

(I swear one of my legs is longer than the other and that is why my tower and other tall thing shots always lean slightly. I decided to live with it this time rather than edit. I will get it right one of these days.)

  2. I love old clock towers. Thanks for sharing this lovely pic Sandy.

Have a wonderful day, hugs, G

  3. Great capture, Sandy. I find that I frequently have the same slant in my shots. It looks fine in the view, but the shot is crooked. When you figure out why, you you let me know?

  4. I always have to straighten my pictures as well.
I just love it when everyday things are beautiful. Someone obviously put some thought behind designing this clock tower.

  5. Nice clock tower and a beautiful sky.
My shots often lean, too. I use Picasa to straighten them. Didn't know there was such a feature until my son showed it to me. Handy to save those shots that are so off-kilter they're otherwise unuseable.

  6. Excellent shot of the beautiful clock tower, well done.

    Have a great weekend!

  7. I think I lost my comment. Anyway, I was telling you how cool I think your excuse for the leaning tower is and that my excuse is often an "inner ear" problem causing some equilibrum issues with me and my photos.

You have the best clock tours Sandy. I recall others you've posted and this one is so great against the beautifully textured sky.

I love how the sky is always blue above the clouds!

  10. I have the same problem when I shoot. My wife tells me to carry a shim. There must be a better way,

  11. Very reminiscent of the tower in St Mark's Sq in Venice ... nicer sky tho

  12. *giggle*
You are one funny woman! :-)

    You captured the tower beautifully,
a miracle really, considering your handicap (come to think of it, one of my legs plays the same trick with me!). ;-)

  13. I don't mind! You take great pictures!

Is it your legs, or maybe it's really modeled after that famous tower in Pisa??? Lean or no, it's a great SWF shot!

  15. You made me smile, Sandy. I think we all do the same thing every once in a while. Maybe we unconsciously pull down or push up when we click the shutter. ;-)

  16. Great capture, Sandy!

  17. I love the tower -- leaning or not! I frequently have the same problem! And the sky is beautiful with lovely clouds. Lovely shot! Thanks! Happy SWF! Have a great weekend!

I think i must also have one leg shorter than the other as I didn't notice it till you pointed it out!

    Great shot all the same.

  24. Now that is the best excuse I have heard. I have to measure my own legs as that is what happends often with my photos too. Still I didn't really notice it leaning as I just thought what a nice composition and beautiful tower.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's definitelyy not your leg. I like your leaning clock, just like Pisa.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love how the tower shoots above the landscape. Thanks.

  27. That is a great shot Sandy! I think it looks off because you are left handed!

  29. Great shot of the clock tower.

  30. Vert nice! And it stands above even the trees.

  31. That's a majestic looking clock tower. You need to photograph the leaning tower of Pisa Sandy!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Who cares if it leans? I'll just tilt my head ever so slightly.
I'd be willing to bet your legs are just fine. Your work as a photographer leaves no doubt. Beautiful as always!

Hahhaa.. I've got the same problem with you. My buildings always seem slanted to one side.
I hope that's a good reason for me to invest in a tripod :P

    Happy weekend Sandy :)

  34. Very striking photo even if the tower is leaning. I think it gives it character. Thanks for sharing.

  44. An Italian Campanile in U.S.
Exactly how they look in Italy, I confirm. Besides, a red one as if made with "Terre de Sienne" (a special clay).
    Perfect choice.

  45. Wow, this is an excellent shot and entry. I love the clock and how it stands out on that blue sky.

  50. Excellent Sandy!
Beautiful clock tower in the foreground.

  51. The clouds and trees make the tower seem to float in the sky--that's gorgeous!

So many clock towers really do lean, that yours doesn't seem to at all. It's a beautiful photograph.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Beautiful tower. Makes me curious about the view from it. I had to lol about your leg comment :) Happy Spring!

MY OH MY...I see this photo and think to myself (before reading) this looks like the tower in Siena that I just saw a couple of weeks ago...then I read your post. I will be posting my Siena pictures one day soon...i only took about 2000 pics over two weeks.

nice shot and the color is perfect.

  59. Looks fine to me. But just for the record, pretty much everybody's got one leg slightly longer than the other. Just so you know.

You could've used this one for Thursday Challenge this week too! But wherever it was, I'm glad you got it out there for us to enjoy.
