The pelican dives 
Deep and direct 
Eyes open wide 

Again and again

It is a game: 

We do not eat to live 
Or live to eat 

But dive deep 
To dive deep 

And come back 
Satisfied.

  7. Aren't they amazing creatures? I got to see a large kettle of brown pelicans diving in a feeding frenzy. Amazing and scary too. I like your poem too.

    Sandy, this is a neat explanation of how Mother Nature is working.

    Dive deep, hunger drives
    dive, born without fear
    dive, deep as needed
    to make a good catch

    I love to watch them do their dives and more often than not they will come up with a fish.

    Around here we have the various breeds of herons. My friend was a white heron. You might remember him standing on the bridge rail waiting for his dive:
