One Single Impression: Smile

From December 29, 2011

Seagulls
In their high-stepping
Broad-shouldered
Puffed up
Way
Of surveying the shore

Make me smile.

These feathered dons own the place.
They privilege me with the opportunity
To breathe their air
To see their sky
To walk in step
With the surf whose pounding cadence
Is a caress,
The fingers-through-the-hair
Of a familiar lover,
A touch that is always welcome,
A leaning in
To the strength
That says all is well and
You are safe.
Walk with me,

Be with me,
Custodian of the tide.

Keep your finger
On the pulse of the world.

Enter the world of a seagull

And smile.

  1. Gulls are the livley greeters and the constant gangs that hang around the beach. They make me smile too. Your poem made me smile this morning. Have a great weekend.

  2. "A custodian of the tide." That's a great line. They sure are though unfortunately there are a great many who are custodians of the McDonalds parking lot, also. ;)

  7. These birds always make me smile.
They don't have a care in the world. Just flying, running on their thin little legs, and looking at you curious, wondering if there will be something left behind for them.

People used to feed them but now I don't see many doing it.
So they go to the garbage dump and this is also the place falcons and eagles go, so it is not so safe for them. I leave something in the bog for them so they know to go there instead of people's homes.

Hope you are having a great day. :)

  18. For what purpose were birds put on earth?
For sure they are happy souls that help us to smile.
Even the thought of those little birds makes us smile.
    Most of the time. :)
Wonderful thoughts put to print, Sandy.
I liked your allegory about their caring for each other.
